The Mummy's Curse (part 6)

After Mrs. Beasly left John called the detectives into the dining room for final instructions.

"Mike, you're hiding behind that chair. When Gus and Jerry go for the twenty dollar bill, you turn on the flashlight and shine it right in their eyes."

"Check."

"Now the one of the walkie-talkies is hidden under the bananas in the fruit bowl. I've got the other and I'll be in the kitchen with Ben. I'll give them lots of mummy business over the walkie-talkie. Sally, you and Jessica are in the closet, right? Stay there and don't rattle your chains, you don't come out until the end. Now Mike, when you hear me say the words ‘mummy’s curse’ you got to switch off the flashlight because that's when I swing open the kitchen door. When I do that Ben, you point like you're putting the curse on them, okay?"

"Okay," said Ben and he wiggled a finger experimentally.

"Let's go for it guys," said John. “Blow the creeps away."

The Kids From B.A.D got set in their places. They were just in time. About five minutes later, they heard a noise in the basement as Gus and Jerry came In through the window. Very slowly and very carefully they came sneaking up the stairs. Neither seemed to like the darkened hallway much, and the shadows in the living room seemed to slow them down as well.

"Maybe we should forget about it," Gus whispered to his brother. "This place is very weird!"

"What're you scared for?" Jerry whispered back. "We're the ones that made up the ghost story."

"Sure," said Gus. "I know, I know. It's just that I'm starting to believe it!"

"Hey look!” said Jerry. “There's the twenty dollar bill on the dining room table!"

Jerry didn't waste a second. He went straight for the money. His brother followed close behind. They were both quite surprised when Mike turned on the flashlight.

"Who goes there!" demanded John in a loud, spooky voice.

Jerry was just reaching for the twenty dollar bill and his arm jerked to a stop. His brother Gus gasped in alarm. Neither boy guessed that it was John on the walkie-talkie.

"Who wants to know?" demanded Jerry, but his voice cracked a little and he didn't sound very tough at all.

"The Mummy!" cried John.

Gus shrunk back from the table."Let's get out of here!" he whispered to his brother.

"Shut up!" hissed Jerry, though his voice definitely shaky now.

"You're trespassing on my domain! You've stolen things again and again!" boomed out John's voice. "Put them back!"

"Oh yeah?" said Jerry. "And what'll you do if we don't?"

"The Curse!" cried out John. "The Mummy's Curse!"

The flashlight snapped off right on cue and the kitchen door swung open. The Mummy was revealed in all his terrible glory. It raised its arm and pointed at the two boys. Gus cried out and grabbed his brother's arm. Jerry was definitely shaking now but he didn't back away.

"I'm not scared of you," he said and he took a step forward toward the kitchen.

"Stop!" cried John through the walkie-talkie. “Do not proceed!”

Ben pointed again but when nothing more dangerous happened, Jerry took another step forward. And then another. Ben tried pointing with both hands but Jerry continued his advance. Ben took a step back away from the door. He looked over helplessly at John. John realized that things were starting to get out of control. He turned up the volume on his walkie-talkie.

"Go Back!" he shouted at Jerry. “The Mummy is getting very angry!”

But Jerry took another step forward instead. Ben took another step back.

"Do something," he hissed at John.

"You do something," John hissed back. "You're the mummy!"

But all Ben could think to do was to take another step backwards. The way it turned out, it was definitely the right move. He stepped on Bentley’s tail. Bently woke up instantly and jumped to his feet with a howl of surprise. He knocked against the table leg and the bag of flour fell onto his back. This surprised Bently all over again. He jumped straight up and he came straight down. Then he made a dash straight for the dining room door shaking clouds of flour in all directions.

Jerry got out of the way just in time, toppling backwards against the wall. Gus ran over and cowered next to him. Suddenly the closet door burst open and Sally and Jessica jumped out.

"BANSHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" they screamed and they waved their chains in the air.

It was all too much for Gus and Jerry. They were out the door, across the front yard and back inside their own house in two seconds flat.

"Well that's the end of that ghost!" said John. "Come on guys, let's code 88 and call it a day.”
