The Mummy's Curse (part 7)

The Kids From B.A.D. came back to visit with Mrs. Beasly the next afternoon. Mrs. Beasly was glad to see them. She was quite pleased with the results they had achieved.

"I just can't believe it!" she told the detectives as she passed them a plateful of cookies. "This morning when I came down to breakfast, everything the ghost had stolen was right there on the kitchen table, even the money!"

"I guess the ghost got the message all right," said John and everyone laughed.

Mrs. Beasly thanked them again, she gave everyone more cookies and then the Kids from B.A.D. had to go. As they were going down the front walk, someone called to them from the hedge.

"Pssssst," hissed Gus. "You guys. Come over here will you?"

The detectives agreed. When they arrived next door Jerry was waiting. He looked very nervous.

"Do you guys still have your curse detector?" he asked.

John nodded and pointed at his belt.

"Give us a reading," Gus pleaded. "We need one bad!"

While John was unclipping his walkie-talkie, Ben slipped around the edge of the hedge. When John began waving the curse detector at Jerry's head, Ben was ready with suitably eerie sounds.

"You guys got a curse all right," said John. "It's a mummy one too by the sounds of it."

"Yeah, we know," said Jerry.

"What can we do?" asked Gus.

"Not much," said John. "The only thing that works on a mummy's curse is doing good deeds."

"Good deeds?" said Jerry in dismay. "Are you sure?"

"Positive," said John. "You do the good deeds as near to where you got the curse as you can."

Gus and Jerry looked over at Mrs. Beasly's house. Then Gus got up and started across the yard.

"Come on," he said to his brother. "We got to."

"How many good deeds does it take to get rid of a mummy's curse?" asked Jerry.

"Hard to say," said John. "Maybe a month, maybe two. It all depends on how hard you try."
