When Megan woke up on the following day she remembered the dream very well for a while. Then the memory began to fade and by late afternoon just the feeling remained. But Megan knew what she had to do, and later that night when she got into bed she took a taste of her diamond ice before going to sleep. She dreamed the dream of the Magic Tree's dance and whenever she wanted to dream it again she did the same thing. The only thing was, each time she tasted her diamond ice it got smaller and smaller. She knew it would soon be all gone.
"What can I do?" she asked Winter one day. "If I taste it too much it will melt away."
"No problem," said Winter. "Just put your piece of diamond ice in a cup of tree water and it will grow back again. I'll bring you some while you sleep tonight and tomorrow everything will be all right."
As it turned out that's exactly what happened. Winter came by later on that night and left a cup of tree water by the window. Megan put her diamond ice into the cup and in a few days it started to grow. And when the tree water began to get low, she put the cup out by her window again and sang a song so Winter would know to come by and fill it up.
And this is something that you could do too. If you find a piece of diamond ice, just put out a cup on your window sill and sing the diamond ice song. Winter will come along during the night and then you will have the tree water you need to keep your diamond ice growing. Just put it into the tree water cup or hang it inside on a piece of string. In a few days it will start to grow and then you can be with the Magic Tree whenever you want. You can dance the tree dance and hear the tree song whenever you want to the whole night long.
This story is the fourth in a collection of six stories and twelve songs with numerous black and white pen and ink illustrations throughout. After dealing with the Dragon Who Eats The Moon, Michael and Megan have many adventures with Winter. They call the Iceman, travel to the White Wolf's secret cave, stop a Glacier and have a wonderful going-away party for Winter. Many of the stories can be acted out and continued by the reader in their everyday life. Although this book is set in Toronto, it can be adapted to fit any North American urban centre.
