She crawled inside. Megan followed. The hole became wider as soon as they entered and it got less dark as they wound their way down. Around a turn in the underground passage, a soft calm glow of friendly light was shining steadfastly back. When they finally turned the corner they found themselves inside a cave. Its walls were two or three meters high, the floor about four meters square. Long, twisty tree roots hung down from the ceiling and also grew out through the sides. Water dripped down from the roots overhead and formed a small pool. The tree water glowed with a soft steady light, but the most amazing thing of all, there were many small crystals of clear, hard ice at the bottom of the pool.
"Diamond ice!" Megan exclaimed. "We finally found some."
"We certainly have," Winter agreed. "And that's not all. We've found the White Wolf's secret place, because there he is by the side of the pool."
She was right about that. When Megan looked over she saw the White Wolf curled up in between two big roots. His eyes were closed. He was fast asleep. From time to time his legs gave a twitch and he yipped and growled in a mumbly way.
"Those were the sounds that we heard before," Megan said.
"He's dreaming a dream," Winter replied. "It's because of the diamond ice."
"Diamond ice helps him to dream?"
"If you want a dream from the Magic Tree, it's the very best way."
"The Magic Tree? Is that the one that stayed behind when you and Spring and Summer and Fall all left the First Land?" Megan asked.
