The Dragon Who Ate The Moon (part 6)

Well that got Megan thinking a bit. She realized the Dragon was right, he did have to eat, and maybe it wasn't the best idea if he flew to town and began eating there. He'd break into houses, markets and stores and before very long all the food would be gone. Then all the people would be hungry too and that wouldn't do at all. So she thought a bit more and some more after that, and finally she knew a good plan.

"Dragon," she said. "You can eat the moon after all, but only if you promise to eat just a single bite, only one each night and no more. And you must promise never to eat it all up like you tried tonight, you must leave the last piece at the very end so the moon can grow and get big again. And when that last piece becomes round and ripe and the moon is full and fat, you can start taking bites again every night just the way that you did before."

The Dragon agreed so Megan fed him an apple or two to keep his stomach from feeling too hungry while he waited to eat the moon.

And as it turned out the Dragon did everything that Megan said. The next night he took a single nibble from the round full moon, and the following night just one nibble more. Night after night he went on that way. Soon the moon was halfway gone, then half of a half and then half of that. It got smaller and smaller, a nibble each night until all that was left was the smallest piece just the size of a star. Then the Dragon stopped eating the moon and he let it grow. It grew bigger and bigger, at first just a sliver, then a quarter, then a half until finally at last it was round and fat. And when it was full and round and ripe, the Dragon began to eat it again just the way that he had before.

And if you look up at the moon yourself and watch it each night you will see what I've said is the truth and no lie. For two whole weeks the Dragon eats the moon, just a nibble at a time until it is almost gone. And then for the two whole weeks after that he lets the moon grow and get big again. But he is only just a Dragon after all and every so often he forgets Megan's song and he swallows the moon all at once by mistake. But it doesn't take long for him to remember and after a half an hour or so, he lets the moon go. It flies up high in the sky again and everything turns out okay in the end just the way it's supposed to be.

This story is the first in a collection of six stories and twelve songs with numerous black and white pen and ink illustrations throughout. Michael and Megan meet the Dragon (who eats the moon) and find out how the Four Seasons first arrived in town. They have many adventures with Winter in particular as she turns back the Glacier, greets the Iceman, and meets her friend the White Wolf in his secret cave. Many of the stories can be acted out and continued by the reader in their everyday life. Although this book is set in Toronto, it can be adapted to fit any North American urban centre.
