Chestnut Pie (part 3)

Megan and Michael and Fall went away to a tree they all knew and gathered a pot full of chestnuts to use. They borrowed a pie plate and lined it with leaves, just taking the best and most colourful ones so that when it was done, the crust would be very flaky. They used a few sticks and some juicy roots too so there would be something extra to chew. They heaped in the chestnuts right up to the top, and they threw in some swamp grass and a few scoops of dirt just to give it more body. They covered the top with the prickly skins the chestnuts came in, so they knew it would be nice and spicy too.

"It looks delicious," Fall had to admit and they all agreed that it was.

That night after supper, Michael and Megan put their chestnut pie outside in the yard where the White Squirrel would see it when he came by. They sang his special calling song, too, so he'd know it was just for him. Then they went to bed.

In the morning when they woke up the pie was gone, and on the ground where the pie had been they found a single chestnut instead. But it wasn't the regular, ordinary kind, they knew that it had to be magic for sure because when they opened the prickly skin, the chestnut inside was all covered with golden sparkles.

"Wow!" Megan cried. "I've never seen one like this before! Let's show it to Fall!"

"He really must have liked your pie a lot if he gave you this," Fall said to them when he saw the golden chestnut.

"Is it magic?" asked Michael.

"It certainly is. Wait'll you see what this chestnut can do and how magic its magic can be," Fall replied.
