The Case Of The Missing Bike (part 10)

Bill dropped the bicycle he was holding and raced out the door. John grabbed the small man by the wrist.

"Stay right where you are," he ordered. "You're under arrest!"

"I'm what?"

"Under arrest. I'm a detective so I can do it," said John.

The small man laughed at him and pulled his arm free. "Don't be stupid, kid," he growled.

Suddenly there were sounds of a scuffle out in the driveway. Sally shouted once and then everything was still again. John groaned. The small man smiled and turned back to him.

"Looks like your girlfriend didn't get very far," he said in a low, threatening voice. "Thought you'd try to run away, didn't you? Pretending you were playing along when all the time you were planning a double-cross. Maybe I better tell you something, kid. Nobody double-crosses me and my partner and gets away with it." He took a step toward John.

"Stay right where you are!" barked a voice from the doorway.

John and the crook turned to see who had spoken. A police officer was just coming in the door. A second followed close behind with Bill firmly in tow. Then Sally and the cabby came in and ran to John. The cabby told him everything while the two officers questioned the crooks.

"I drove around the block and when I got back here you weren't anywhere in sight. I thought you might be in trouble so I called in on my radio and the dispatcher got the police. Luckily there was a cruiser only a block away. They got here just in time to catch that big guy chasing Sally." The cabby pointed to Bill, who was shaking his head at the two officers.

John pointed to the pile of bikes. "We were right about those two being the crooks," he said.

"You sure were," replied the cabby. "They have an awful lot of bikes stashed down here. Say, look over there. That one looks just like my son's."

John and Sally helped him pull the bicycle free from the others. The police looked on with interest as the cabby checked it over. The big man swore. The smaller one just glared.

"Now what's all this about stolen bicycles?" one of the officers asked. He made notes while John and Sally explained everything to him.

Later some reporters came and Sally and John explained it all over again for them. The next day the paper had the whole story. B.A.D. Kids Make Good read the headline. There was even a picture of all four detectives with the cabby.

"This is just the beginning," John told them all when they met to admire their picture. "The Barton Avenue Detectives are off and rolling. Nothing can stop us now. The crooks in this city better watch their step cause from now on everyone knows that the Kids from B.A.D. always get their man."
