"I think so. There was a blue van going down the street real slow,"
explained Sally. "It kept stopping and then going and then stopping
again. The thing was, I noticed it was stopping in front of all the houses
that had bicycles parked out front."
"That's got to be them!" cried John. He jumped up. "They're
the crooks all right. They're going around casing the neighbourhood for
likely places to hit later on."
"Then they come back at night?" said Ben.
"Exactly," said John. "Did you get their licence number,
Sally?"
"Couldn't get close enough," she said. "I was just sneaking
up on them when they took off around the block."
"They're probably still around somewhere," suggested Mike.
"I hope so," said John. "We'd better go in partners this
time. Mike, you and Ben take the west side of the neighbourhood and me and
Sally will do the east side. Come on, let's go."
"What about lunch?" asked Sally. "I'm hungry."
"No time to eat now," said John. "When you're a detective
you've got to be able to work on an empty stomach, right guys?"
Mike's mouth was full of peanut butter sandwich but he nodded in agreement.
Ben just belched.
